The approximately 3.5-acre block located at 1414 S. Tryon Street was developed to include two 8-story buildings with 290,000 square feet of office space and 30,000 square feet of ground-floor retail. The RailYard; intended to pay homage to the area’s role in inspiring the construction of Charlotte’s first railroad, which arrived from Columbia, SC through present-day SouthEnd. The brick buildings at The RailYard features a “cohesive, contemporary design palette” of masonry, ornamental steel and glass, as well as double-door arched entryways and open floor plans with views of uptown and South End. RBA sought inspiration from the architecture of the turn-of-the-century rail yard houses, which were designed to create a pseudo-central plaza of rail beds.
